Ernest's father was a stock trader and farmer; his mother was a homemaker.
During the early years in St. Louis, Ernest was a uniformed Western Union messenger boy.
The family was living in E. St. Louis in 1909-10 when he became a locomotive fireman for the Vandelia Railroad Co.; resigned and moved to Olney before 1918.
Between 1919-1922 he worked at Zimmerley's Garage in Olney, IL. Later he was a general salesman and paint store manager before becoming a distributor for the Bowes Sealfast Automotive Corp. in the mid 1930's. He continued with them until the time of his death.

Ernest M. Campbell was born in Oakland, Illinois on October 5, 1892, and in 1900, his parents moved to St. Louis Missouri, where he completed his education. Companion Campbell entered the employ of the Vandalia Railroad Company (now the St. Louis Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad) as a locomotive fireman in September, 1909, and was later transferred to Terre Haute, Indiana, where he first saw Masonic light.
After serving the railroad as fireman and engineman, he moved to Olney, Illinois, and became engaged in the automotive accessory business, and now is the distributor of Bowes Sealfast Products in the Southern Illinois territory.
He was made a Master Mason in Euclid Lodge No. 573 at Terre Haute, Indiana, on October 27, 1914, and affiliated with Olney Lodge No. 140 on January 17, 1918, serving as Worshipful Master in 1922 and 1926.
He received the Cryptic Rite in Olney Council No. 55 on January 8, 1918, and served as Thrice Illustrious Master in 1932. He served on several committees in the Grand Council and on September 19, 1941, he was elected and installed Most Illustrious Grand Master. He was exalted in Richland Chapter No. 38 (now Henry Godeke Chapter) on December 28, 1917, and served as Excellent High Priest in 1921. He is a member of Gorin Commandery No. 14, K.T. and served as Commander in 1944 and is the Eminent Grand Standard Bearer of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Illinois. He is also a member of Springfield Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite.
Companion Campbell is a member of Illinois Priory No. 11Knights of the York Cross of Honour. In the Grand Chapter, he served as District Inspector from 1923 to 1933; on the Board of Grand Examiners from 1933 to 1938 and in October, 1938 was elected Grand Master of the First Veil. He was regularly advanced each year and on October 30, 1947, was elected Most Excellent Grand High Priest.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Walter Smith, Rev. Paul Ragsdale, and Re. H.L. Main at the First Methodist Church, Olney, January 19, 1957. Interment in Haven Hill Cemetery.
The Grand Chapter was represented by Companions Edward E. Core, M.E. Past Grand High Priest, Grand Secretary; Harry C. Foltz, M.E. Past Grand High Priest, John H. Lidaker, Jr., R.E. Grand King, William E. Crouch, E.G. Principal Sojourner, Ralph P. Hornbuckle, E.G. Master of the First Veil, and a host of Masonic brethren and companions.
It is my order that this memorial be read in each chapter in this Grand Jurisdiction at the first stated convocation after it is received and that a page of the records be set apart in honor of his memory. Also, that the alter and furniture be draped in mourning for the space of thirty days.

eighty-second Most Illustrious Grand Master, of the Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters of the State of Illinois, passed away January 16, 1957, at Olney, Illinois. He was born at Oakland, Illinois, October 5, 1892. For many years he was employed by the Vandalia Railroad Company as a locomotive fireman. For the past several years he was a distributor of Bowes Seal Fast Products. Companion Campbell is survived by his wife Sibyl; four daughters, Jean Geick, Barbara Campbell, Katherine Rogers, and Carolyn Phillips; his mother Lottie Campbell, and a sister Mercedes McCarthy.
He was made a Master Mason in Euclid Lodge No. 573, Terre haute, Indiana, on October 27, 1914. He affiliated with Olney Lodge No. 140, on January 17, 1918, and was its Worshipful Master in 1922 and 1926. He became Illustrious Grand Steward of the Grand Council in 1937, and was elected and installed Most Illustrious Grand Master September 19, 1941. Companion Campbell served Masonry well. He was a District Inspector of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter from 1923 to 1933, and a member of the Board of Grand Examiners from 1933 to 1938. He served on various Committees of the Grand Council and as a grand Lecturer and as a member of the Board of Grand Examiners.
Companion Fred O. Ellis, Most Illustrious Grand Master, several Grand Council Officers and Most Illustrious Past Grand Masters, as well as many prominent Masons attended the services held in the First Methodist Church of Olney, Saturday, January 19, 1957. Interment was in Haven Hill cemetery.
The many Masonic friends of Companion Campbell mourn his passing and sorrowfully bow their heads at the Closing of the Record.

It is with great sorry that the announcement was made of the passing of one of the leading Freemasons of the nation as well as one who had guided the destiny of the Order of the Sword of Bunker Hill for over thirteen years.
Brother Ernest M. Campbell, 63, of Olney, IL. died suddenly January 16, 1957, when seized by a heart attack while on his way to attend to Sword of Bunker Hill business in that city.
Brother Campbell had served as Most Honorable Grand Commander in Chief of the Grand Order of the Sword of Bunker Hill since June 17, 1943, when he succeeded Brother Frank G. Taylor, who founded the Order Oct. 15, 1912. Under his guidance the Order has grown from a membership of 13,320 to that of more than 60,000 at the present time.
He has been an outstanding leader in all branches of Masonry having served as Most Excellent Grand High Priest of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Illinois, Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Illinois, Eminent Prior of Illinois Priory No. 11 Knights of the York Cross of Honour, Right Eminent Grand Generalissimo of the Grand Commandery, Knight Templars of Illinois, as well as having served through the chairs of all subordinate bodies of York Rite Masonry.
Harhem Order No. 73 joins the other 99 Orders of the Grand Order in mourning his loss and we mingle our sorrows with those of his family in their sad bereavement.

Exalted in Richland Chapter No. 38 on December 28, 1917 and served as High Priest in 1921.
Greeted in Olney Council No. 55 on Jan. 8, 1918 and served as T.I.M. in 1933
Knighted in Gorin Commandery No. 14 on April 8, 1919; served as Eminent Commander in 1944.
In the Grand Council Companion Campbell was quite active, having served on several Grand Council Committees and in 1937 was elected Grand Stewart and advanced regularly and served as Most Illustrious Grand Master in 1941.
In the Grand Commandery he also served on several committees and was elected Grand Warder in 1947, advancing each year until 1953 when as Em. Grand Generalissimo, he was required to withdraw on account of ill health.
In the Grand Chapter Companion Campbell was most active, having served as District Inspector from 1923 to 1933 at which time he was appointed a member of the Board of Grand Examiners of Grand Chapter, serving from 1933 to 1938 and in October 1938 was elected Grand Master of the First Veil of the Grand Chapter, advancing regularly until October 1947 when he was elected Grand High Priest.
He was also a member of Illinois Priory No. 11 K.Y.C.H. and served as Eminent Prior of that body in 1950-1951 and now holds the distinction of being a "Knight York Grand Cross of Honor with two Quadrants."
